"LOOK OF LOVE"
BBC Radio 2, Tuesday, 10th February 2004, 8.30 p.m.

In two one-hour programmes, Michael Ball tells the story of one of the greatest songwriters of the latter half of the twentieth century, indeed many such as Pete Waterman would place him in the pantheon of composers like Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin.

His success in the 60s, particularly with Dionne Warwick was phenomenal "Walk on By", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "Alfie", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Always Something There To Remind Me", "This Guy's In love With You", "Message To Martha", "The Look Of Love" ...and there were so many, many more. The songs weren't all the preserve of Ms Warwick, however; over here in the UK, Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Frankie Vaughan and Cilla Black also did very well out of Burt, and of course his lyricist par excellence, Hal David.

This series of course tells Bacharach's life story, but focuses on the complexities of his music, the content and context of his songs, and the changing perceptions of them over the years. It also deals with his home life, using new interviews with two ex-wives, Carole Bayer Sager and Angie Dickinson.

There is also a few possibly unexpected voices not heard in previous documentaries on Bacharach, such as Steve Tyrell, Corinne Drewery of Swing Out Sister, Tony Banks of Genesis, Pete Waterman, and Sandra Bernhard.
